How to Build a Greenhouse Cheaply at home

Before you embark on building your own greenhouse there are various factors that you need to take into account, to make sure that your greenhouse is a success.

Some of these crucial factors are; Location- you need to ensure that the specific location in which you will build your greenhouse provides sufficient exposure to sunlight. Sunlight must not be blocked from reaching your greenhouse by any barriers such as buildings or trees. Other factors that need consideration are a good drainage system, availability of water, electricity, heat and protection from strong winds. If you would like to learn more about the factors that you should consider, click on this link; Factors to consider before building your greenhouse.

For the actual plan on how to build your own greenhouse, here is a sample plan that is cost effective and simple to follow;

Materials Needed:

1. 80 pieces size 2×4 wood (treated)
2. 5 pieces of 20 foot each “of 5/8 inch” rebar, cut into 1/3′s – 6 foot in length.
3. 4 pieces of fence posts, 8 foot in length (treated).
4. Size “40×24 fee” UV “polyethylene”, stabilized
5. 7 pieces of 20 foot schedule “40 PVC” drilled with a hole size 3/16 to ¼ inch “dead center” at 10 feet.
6. 84 feet that is “cut into 4 foot lengths” of “½ schedule 40 PVC”
7. 60 pieces of 2 ½ inches fence staples

Actual Step-by-step plan

1. Begin by extending a thin rope or string where the “two long sides” (the length) of your greenhouse will be. Then pound the 6 foot rebar in, each with a distance of 4 feet away from each other, in a “straight line” and allowing 48 inches to protrude from the soil or ground.

2. Nail the 2×6 runner onto the “rebar stakes”. This will provide you with something to nail the polyethylene on later. You may use a “60 2 ½ inch fence staples”.

3. Slide in the PVC pieces (20 inch) over the “rebar stakes”, making certain that no sharp points are exposed such as rebar, wire ends, rough pipes etc.

4. Put the PVC pieces (20 foot) on the “rebar stakes”. You need to have somebody do “one side” as you also do the “other side” carefully and slightly at each time. Make sure that you drilled holes “parallel to the ground”.

5. Slide the wire all through the PVC holes and through the 8 PVC (4foot) pieces “along the roof”.

6. So that the “ribs” will not shift horizontally, you need to wire together the 4 foot PVC pipe lengths with either baling or copper wire. Make certain that the wire is wrapped so that the PVC pipe is forced inward.

7. Construct now the “two end walls” and the doors. Use vertical posts (4X4) 10 foot length and buried 3 or 4 feet for the doorway frame. Make certain that the end walls are not floppy and must stay vertically so that the PVC will not separate. Your door must be very tight so that the wind will not be able to inflate the greenhouse.

8. Drive some nails into the post’s base horizontally of the posts and submerge them to the ground.

9. With somebody’s help, and each person on each side holding the plastic, slide it over the rib cage and then attach the ends by wrapping the plastic’s end around lath pieces then “nail the lath” to the “end walls” and also along the foundation.

Now just set aside some space for your tools and you should have a simple and basic greenhouse to work with. You can check with your local hardware store for the materials and if necessary, give them this plan and see if they can help to set up you greenhouse for you. Just count the cost in advance and see whether you can get everything done within your budget.

Simple Greenhouse Plans to Building your Own Greenhouse

Having your own greenhouse can be a rewarding a venture giving you the ability to grow your own crops right from home in well controlled climatic conditions. However it can be expensive to buy one and building one yourself can be a daunting task if you have no greenhouse plan.

A greenhouse should be properly designed taking into account various factors (such as location and local building regaulations) to ensure that it is built right. To learn more about these factors, read our article on the factors to consider before you  build your own greenhouse. Your options to ensuring that you build your greenhouse the right way are; you hire a greenhouse expert to design and/or build a greenhouse plan for you or get a greenhouse plan and build a greenhouse yourself. In this article, I will give you a simple greenhouse plan detailing step-by-step what you need from the base of your greenhouse to its roof.

Here is the detailed step-by step greenhouse plan;

1. The Base(foundation) of your Greenhouse

In this plan, your foundation will be made from sawn timber. This timber is similar to that used for fence posts. Your foundation should ideally be 2400 mm by 3000 mm. You can buy this timber from your local timber merchants.

2. The Side walls of your greenhouse.

Your side walls should be built from 75 by 50 tanalised sawn timber. The measurement for this timber is usually around 4800 mm. After setting up your foundation firmly on the ground, attach your side walls(upright) on top of the base using galvanized nails.

3. The Frame for the Roof.

The roof frames should be placed above the side walls at each end of it. Similarly, use galvanized nails to attach them together. The ideal timber for this are 75 by 50 tanalised sawn timber.

4. Greenhouse Windows

You should then create some space for the windows. You should use 50 by 50 sawn tanalised timber and ensure that the windows are hinged to allow for temperature regulation.

5. The Greenhouse Covering.

The recommended covering for the greenhouse should be made out polythene. This is because it is usually resistant to ultra-violet rays. Use thin battens to hold the polythene covering onto the greenhouse. The battens are to be nailed to the greenhouse studs and roof rafters. When buying the polythene covering, ensure that it is ultra-violet-resistant, as some polythene are usually not.

Building a greenhouse can prove to be a demanding and challenging task. You need to research on the various aspects related to building a greenhouse and greenhouse gardening. This is so as to ensure that you build a productive greenhouse. You need to take the time to do this and also weigh the costs of building a greenhouse as compared to buying an already pre-made greenhouse. It is not always cheaper to build than buy a greenhouse kit.
