Simple Greenhouse Plans to Building your Own Greenhouse

Having your own greenhouse can be a rewarding a venture giving you the ability to grow your own crops right from home in well controlled climatic conditions. However it can be expensive to buy one and building one yourself can be a daunting task if you have no greenhouse plan.

A greenhouse should be properly designed taking into account various factors (such as location and local building regaulations) to ensure that it is built right. To learn more about these factors, read our article on the factors to consider before you  build your own greenhouse. Your options to ensuring that you build your greenhouse the right way are; you hire a greenhouse expert to design and/or build a greenhouse plan for you or get a greenhouse plan and build a greenhouse yourself. In this article, I will give you a simple greenhouse plan detailing step-by-step what you need from the base of your greenhouse to its roof.

Here is the detailed step-by step greenhouse plan;

1. The Base(foundation) of your Greenhouse

In this plan, your foundation will be made from sawn timber. This timber is similar to that used for fence posts. Your foundation should ideally be 2400 mm by 3000 mm. You can buy this timber from your local timber merchants.

2. The Side walls of your greenhouse.

Your side walls should be built from 75 by 50 tanalised sawn timber. The measurement for this timber is usually around 4800 mm. After setting up your foundation firmly on the ground, attach your side walls(upright) on top of the base using galvanized nails.

3. The Frame for the Roof.

The roof frames should be placed above the side walls at each end of it. Similarly, use galvanized nails to attach them together. The ideal timber for this are 75 by 50 tanalised sawn timber.

4. Greenhouse Windows

You should then create some space for the windows. You should use 50 by 50 sawn tanalised timber and ensure that the windows are hinged to allow for temperature regulation.

5. The Greenhouse Covering.

The recommended covering for the greenhouse should be made out polythene. This is because it is usually resistant to ultra-violet rays. Use thin battens to hold the polythene covering onto the greenhouse. The battens are to be nailed to the greenhouse studs and roof rafters. When buying the polythene covering, ensure that it is ultra-violet-resistant, as some polythene are usually not.
